Main Sequence is an exciting creation of the CSIRO, designed to connect groundbreaking research and technology developments with the investments that will make them reality. It maps each of its investments to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, making it a great fit for NGS Super and what we strive to achieve with our investments — strong returns and positive impact. We currently have $40 million committed to investments in Main Sequence.
Since it was established in 2017, Main Sequence has invested in 41 companies, starting them on the pathway to scale and impact, with a focus on these 6 challenges:
- enable the next intelligence leap
- decarbonise the planet
- supercharge industrial productivity
- reach humanity scale healthcare
- bridge the gap to space
- feed 10 billion people.
Ending plastic waste: Samsara Eco
One of the companies working towards the challenge of decarbonising the planet is Samsara Eco. Across the globe, scientists are working on ways to deal with the devastating issues caused by use and disposal of plastic. The end goal is a world where we are able to infinitely recycle plastic, stop producing plastic from fossil fuels and remove the 9 billion tonnes that have been created since 1935, when nylon was first invented.
CSIRO — among a number of science and research entities globally — possesses enzyme technology that can break down plastics, allowing them to be truly recyclable and ending plastic waste. The challenge is to harness this technology and use it with other emerging technologies to re-invent how plastic is made, processed and recycled, so that we can continue to use it where it needs to be used, without it being a burden to the planet.
